We all know that high intensity discharge lamps are the latest advancement in lighting technology.

The high intensity discharge lamps operate at a completely different principle from incandescent (filament) lamps. Electrical discharge between electrodes causes the filter materials in the discharge tube to emit light. The light is generated directly by an arc discharge.

The arc discharge may be at low or at high pressure of gases and vapors. H.I.D. lamps operate at high pressures. These lamps are classified as High Pressure Mercury Vapor Lamps (HPMV) and Metal Halide Lamps (MHL). These (HPSV) and Metal Halide Lamps (MHL). These are filled with pure mercury / mercury and sodium / halogen compounds of sodium, indium thallium, dysprosium, along with a rare gas filled in the discharge tube at low pressure when the arc is initiated. These materials are efficient in light production as they are vaporized by heat from electric discharge in the rare gas. Some minutes after starting, both light output and color will vary until lamp stability is achieved.

Application: These lamps produce enormous quantity of light with great intensity, rendering it suitable for indoor and outdoor lighting. Due to its high intensity and compactness, these are used for large area lighting: streets, roads, highways, airports, storage years, shipping yards, railway stations, sports field. There are no better lamps made /available today other than these lamps for these applications.

Operational control: HID lamps are suitable for operation from A. C. mains only.

Any discharge lamp has negative co-efficient of resistance, necessitating the use of current limiting devices often externally. However, Blended Light lamps have built-in filament to act as current limiting device while producing color improvement in light.

H.I.D. lamps operate at the rate voltage, current, frequently and ambience, inductive choke coil is used as a Ballast in series with the lamp to act as a current limiting device.

The Ballast must be connected to the phase conductor from the main supply. The wiring connection from the Ballast should be provided to the centre of the cap. Care must be taken to ensure that the operation is at the normal mains voltage. In correct Ballast or significant fluctuations of the mains voltages can be detrimental to the lamp life while distorting the color of the light. Sudden fluctuations of the supply voltage beyond specified limits can result in arc extinction.

Starting: High pressure mercury vapor lamps and Blended Light lamps do not need any extraordinary starting device. Starters / Igniters which can provide voltage pulses up to 1.5 to 5 k v are required for Metal Halide lamps, and High Pressure sodium lamps. In this range of lamps, once the arc has been initiated, the starting device will no longer provide voltage pulses.

Run-up: The starting current of the lamps is about one and a half time to twice the value of the current of the discharge lamps. The current capacity of the circuit wiring device should be chosen for this requirement. Immediately after switching on, even higher transient currents can flow for a short time and therefore the use of inert fuse is recommended. The circuit wiring may permit no higher voltage drops than 5 V.

The circuit current will stabilize at the rated current after start up of the lamp. When rated current is attained the lamp will stabilize to give the designed light out put of rate designed power intake. Continuously lighted lamps will give better performance of lumen maintenance and life. Repeated switching off and on will result in a short life and poor performance.

Restarting: When the lamp is switched off or when the arc is extinct due to low voltage, discharge lamps need 5 to 15 minutes for cooling down before re-ignition is possible.

After cooling down, the lamps will start automatically if the supply voltage is available. The period can be influenced by factors such as open or close luminary. In case of Metal Halide lamps, it is possible to start lamp immediately without cooling down time with special starters.

Lumen depreciation: When controlled by a choke, the lamp attains 90% of its total luminous flux 3 to 7 minutes after being switched on. The values of luminous flux given in the tables are measured at rated consumption and in case of: - High pressure Sodium Vapor Lamps in horizontal position. - Metal Halide Lamps in horizontal position unless otherwise specified. - High Pressure Mercury vapor Lamps and Blended Light lamps in vertical -position, cap up.

This amount of luminous flux will slowly diminish as the lamp continues its operation through its life. The amount of reduction in luminous flux is called lumen deprecation.

Power Factor: In case of discharge lamps with inductive Ballasts, the circuit power factor is between 0.5 to 0.7. It can be improvised by the use of appropriate power factor corrective capacitors indicated in the relevant tables.

Radio Interference: Except during ignition, discharge lamps do not interfere with Radio or Television.

Frequency of Switching: The life of the discharge lamps depends largely on frequency of switching on and off. Every time a lamp is switched on, it uses the Electron emitting materials inside the lamp, thus reducing life from 5 hours to 10 hours per start. Avoid unnecessary actuation of switching.

When ordering: When ordering, please specify the following: - Type of lamps (HPMV, HPSV, MHL), - Lamp wattage. - Bulb shapes/ finish (Tubular Ellipsoidal, coated / clear). - CAP (B22 / E27 / E40). - The mains voltage or voltage tolerances. - Ordering code number.

Note: - All the lamps are manufactured as per International Electro-technical commission (I.E.C.) Standards. - Lamps are available as per European / American standards and with various color temperatures. - Other types of lamps are also available on request.
